2005 Volvo XC90 V8 Balance shaft bearings?

PostSat Dec 08, 2012 2:10 pm

Fellow hoons_

I have a problem, it's been ongoing for a few months now and I'm not sure what to do. Let me start at the beginning.

My wife and I bought a 2005 XC90 on the last day in June this year (2012) It had everything our young family needed; safety, reliability (or so we thought) room for 3 small kids and a big dog (130lb Newfie/Shepard cross) It also had a low-ish 83xxx miles on it and a sweet Yamaha V-8, think Taurus SHO V-6 and Noble M600.

We drove the truck-wagon for 6 weeks and then disaster. It sounded like the engine was eating itself, a horrible grinding from under the hood. We had it towed to our local Volvo/BMW/MB specialists who started it then promptly turned it off.

I contacted the dealer and they basically told me that we bought it as-is, no warranty and they couldn't do much for us. So I called Volvo NA because a Volvo that doesn't make it to 90,000 miles is a bit of a slap in the face to well-known Volvo reliability. They said take it to a dealership and pay for them to tear down the engine and find the cause then we can see.

I went to a dealership and explained to him what Volvo told me. They advised that it would take 9-11 hours @ $120/hr to tear the engine down, but that would most likely be a waste of time. "Volvo is just going to ave us tear the engine down until they can say it was caused by lack of maintenance" the service manager tells me. They have done this twice, one guy was SOL, the other got a couple hundred to put toward the repair.

I am at a loss at the moment, I can't afford a $1500 gamble. Does anyone have an XC90 V8 in their garage they can donate? :(

First, what makes you think this is the balance shaft bearing, aside from a quick glance that shows this to be a common problem? You should be able to find out if your engine needed the update, whether it received it, and whether the engine was washed. Did you buy the car from a Volvo dealer or a private seller?

Without breaking down the engine I don't know for sure whether or not it is the balance shaft, but two separate Volvo specialists (dealership and independent) said that it's the most likely culprit.

I bought it from a Ford dealer, small and reportedly reputable.

I'll find out if it needed and/or received the update and see what that information does.

I guess I just assumed the engine was washed at the Ford dealer where we bought it, it was spotless.

Thanks for your insight! Question everything, right?
